MACROBIOTICS IN SOCIETY
Making a Difference in the World

We are an integral part of the fabric of society, not separate from it. After applying macrobiotic principles to heal ourselves, we each have an opportunity to impact society in positive, far-reaching ways. Guided by the spirit of "One Grain: Ten Thousand Grains," we can all make invaluable contributions in community education, social programs and many other areas where people matter more than profit, and our perspective presents unlimited possibilities to change the future.

William Spear

As an original faculty member of the Kushi Institute since its inception, Spear established a non-profit foundation to promote Macrobiotics and support people facing life-threatening illness.

Since the late 1960s when he established one of the nation's first suicide hot-lines, Spear has traveled to help people in areas afflicted by war or natural disasters such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Chelyabinsk, Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. He serves on community committees and is a member of the Special Advisory Board for Developmental Delay Resources to assist children with sensory, motor, language, social, and emotional challenges.

In 1997, he established the Silent Oceans Project to highlight the dangers to marine mammals of underwater sonar and noise pollution.

Spear's most recent book, "Recovering Original Ability" will be released in 2010.
