Mission & Activities
Mission
The Fortunate Blessings Foundation is a non-profit, non-faith-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to innovative education for well-being by promoting wholeness and vitality through dietary and lifestyle practices, for harmonious and ecologically viable human living and working environments and public spaces, and on a global level to providing trauma relief following natural disasters.
We live at an exciting moment in history - an age of contrasting trends. On the one hand, disharmony, fragmentation and malaise appear widespread on many levels: spiritual, psychological, social, international, environmental. On the other hand, as modern human beings, we are increasingly coming to recognize our interconnection with each other, with the Earth, and with all beings everywhere. The goals of the Fortunate Blessings Foundation are aligned with this unifying trend toward wholeness. While the Foundation's activities vary widely, they are all founded on the conviction that what we commonly experience as "inner" and "outer" worlds are really one.
Activities
With this holistic model as a base, for more than 35 years we offer a variety of international seminars, workshops, conferences and individual services in the field of macrobiotic education, natural alternative health approaches, sustainable ecological design practices, personal transformation and end-of-life counseling. These activities are presented to a wide range of audiences including physicians and health-care workers, the general public, architects and designers, AIDS and cancer patients, environmentalists, refugees from wars or environmental disasters. They take place in settings such as cultural institutions, universities, hospitals, nursing homes and hospices, residences and workshop retreat centers in countries around the globe.
In an effort to relieve human suffering on all levels and in acknowledgement of our common unity as one family on this small planet, our founder, William Spear, and staff collaborate with others to assist orphaned and traumatized children following natural disasters wherever they may occur.
Funding
The Foundation raises funds through grants from organizations and corporations; private donations from individuals; fees from seminars, courses, workshops and conferences.
The term "fortunate blessings" is associated with the symbol for "wind" in the Asian art of feng shui, based on the I Ching, the ancient oracle. The I Ching identifies the primal qualities present in the universe and all beings; the quality of "wind" signifies the blossoming of energy, prosperity, expansiveness and potential transformation. In the name of our organization, "fortunate blessings" symbolizes an openness to the experience of gratitude for whatever life brings.
